Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image are visible in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some are not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of files that included little previously unseen data.
