A recent study reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
