In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
