A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
