It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime had a six-month pause that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for time.
This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
