Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
